General Midi with a harsh task

Breakbeat countenance of English, progressive Starecase duo, General Midi is berthing to a port under a name "sophomore album". To put briefly, "Operation Overdrive" will be released in early June by Distinct'ive Records label.

a half of General Midi project, Paul Crossman

Presumably many of you, who are keen on breakbeat sounds, link General Midi undertaking or with that device, or as a Paul Crossman solo project. However, in point of fact, this Bristol dweller is only a half of aforementioned music project, because the second half, being gray eminence for many years, is Crossman friend, Alasdair Watson. Their common breakbeat history had kicked off at womb of DJ Harper label, Kilowatt, as well as in Rennie Pilgrem imprint, Thursday Club Recordings. And at the end of the day Paul and Alasdair landed up in a listing main producers (amongst Hybrid, Ils) of very big electronic-indie player - Distinct'ive Records.

Debut album cranked out by this English duo, "Midi-Style", was really no-brainer that could satisfy wants of breakbeat fans, in particular placed those nodding towards electro amalgams, their just the thing. Albeit, unfortunately, nothing figures that the General Midi has gone throught that good-accomplished works this time. Anyhow suited at an angle of point, content of "Operation Overdrive" suggests resounding like this, apparently. Obviosly, they have been currently proceeding with bailing out the electro leverages with their music patterns. Although this's probably the only one good message. Maybe the involvement a former The Prodigy guitarist, Jim Davis, as well. There will be more singing, less rapping, at all events, and prevailing silly 4/4 rhythms, instead of a clarion breaks force.

And finally those all elements will be bundled, roughly speaking, on a concoction swinging of Justice, Kissy, Depeche Mode and Dizzee Rascal. To be frank, in my book, it doesn't mean anything good, nor vaticinating positive feedback in the incoming future. At General Midi Myspace profile you can listen to the 5-minute "Operation Overdrive" teaser. Moreover, in turn from the Distinct'ive Records label website, you stand a chance to download "4 Million Ways", the first track from this album.

Fanu makes a day off

Personally, he is the greatest revelation on drum'n'bass scene from Northern Europe since Teebee and Polar have emerged. Keeping on a classic, quintessential oldschool style, the whiz-bang jungle juggler, Finnish producer Fanu, has provided few hours ago his brand-new album, "Homefree". At present available in digital format only.

album cover

This is only the one citizen of Finland (recently I've been weirdly often writing about this country musicians) known by me, who has made an amazing career on breakbeat scene. His outputs are more valuable for me, because Janne Hatula builds on drawing on the roots of masters' genre, which in major productions can't attest their presence, and revamping at creating his unique style. Like he has done it in a powerful, mighty subverted cuts in Toshiro tune. As far as I know, Fanu's recent huge effort was an album with guitar maestro Bill Laswell, "Lodge".

And it seems to be the biggest archievement in Hatul's current track record. But it's not at all, for me. I prefer much more, as well as hit it off his debut album, Daylightless. "Homefree" is mercifully encapsulated in these atmospherics. Of couse, Janny has accounted for whole heavy duty, thus he was both a blacksmith and a chief. Except maybe without cointaining remixed "For Those Who Dream" by Vector Burn (in return Fanu mixed again Oliver Scott track, "1000 Thrones") and mellow dusky downtempo "Showdown" (being an outcome of a fruitfull liaison with American trip hop duo, The New Law).

Songs snippets from "Homefree" album you may listen at Digital-Tunes website. Generally, it's a full-fledged spectrum of the ferocious, techy beats being a lurking and cryptic visions (accorded with Photek, Jonny L or Makai legacy), tangled with a touch haunting dancehall spectres and fine chillout tones. Arduous, complex accomplishment. In spite of my attempts to contact to Jane, unfortunately he haven't replied me yet, when "Homefree" will be released in physical issue.

O wiele bardziej przypadł on mi do gustu na Daylightless - swoim debiutanckim albumie. W takich właśnie klimatach jest usadowiony "Homefree". Robota w pełni spoczywała na barkach Janne. No może prawie nie licząc remiksu "For Those Who Dream" (z kolei Fanu przerobił numer Olivera Scotta "1000 Thrones") oraz downtempowego "Showdown" (będący owocem współpracy z amerykańskim duetem triphopowym - The New Law).

Paavoharju in a blossomed out valley

Since I had come across with the Husky Rescue team music, no one didn't influence as such at my attitude of views of folktronic sounds from Finland. But pending when Paavoharju second album has emerged. And by dint of such longplays as "Laulu Laakson Kukista", for example, this genre is still extremely startled me, and also entreating to take a drive into an alone trip through snowy Scandinavia.

album cover

As their music as their team name - it's diffuculty apprehended entirely what it all means. There's not a question or hesitation if there's much chaos, inner disorder, discord or cacophony, because you can't ascertain it's flawed. Simply you listen it again, again and there's no end, it's not over. Despite it's beyond your grasp, you require more. Yet I mull over, thereinafter, Paavaharju dowry what both entranced elationed me, but, unfortunately, I can't firmly point out what's stunning here itself. Now it's utterly otherwise. Just occured at second time, before it on their debut album, Yhä Hämärää, I could't get through its a concept, a core, a catching direct theme's contact and the clues leading to a main dispatch. Some of you argue that their first full-length effort proves better traits in confronting Laulu Laakson Kukista. I'm not conviced this a statement and that's why I'm in an opposite outlook. To be honest, their debut album had a shortage of the true fabulous sparklies.

The few hallucinogenic, oneiric compositions ("Kuljin Kauas" or Valo Tihkuu Kaiken Lapi) were only ones which allowed me to catch a whiff their really lineage enfolded a frigid, unobtainable, still exotic hushed Finland, indeed. To my rerief, "Laulu Laakson Kukista" album contains more such thaumaturgic elements, at which I plain lift up, than it was before. Album title reflects its content. In my free translation it means "a song for a valley of flowers", namely. Those idyllic bells of angelic electro pop in "Kevätrumpu". Theatrical, sacral symphony of Spartan trip hop march in Kirkonväki. Off-limits soothe bizzare drawn in "Ursulan Uni". And finally, a nineteenth century waltz of imaginery dignity along with a grace of slightly dirty instruments. Wayward soaring delicate soundscapes encompassed lo-fi frameworks.

What a pity, "Laulu Laakson Kukista" duration is only 35 minutes, any longer. It due to you demand more and more up parts of these miraculous music pieces. That is to say, there's no needs for diving into genuine forms from Africa, South America nor Japan, because it's sufficiently far their shapes in Europe. So for freaks following bands (Flunk, Mum) and delicate, alive sounds stream from Morr Music imprint, Paavoharju second album, the "Laulu Laakson Kukista", is a simply obvious of obviousness.
